A visual delight quite a few number of times is a treat for eyes. And when the treat is lavish in the form of breathtaking sets, the delight is even more pleasing. A movie’s cinematography binds you to the journey of the built character. Production Design thus becomes an important drawing factor.

Many movies had exceptional sets but there were few which were exceptional and we picked them for you. Here’s a look at them:

The Film city in Mumbai had huge sets for this period drama directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Palaces & forts for outdoor and the built sets for indoor shoots added color to this love story of Bajirao and his second wife Mastani.

2# The Sheeshmahal of Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo (2015)

Barajatiya took up film making inspired from K.Asif and his memorable Mughal-E-Azam which has a sheesh mahal built in over 2 years. 55 years later, Nitin Chandrakant Desai recreated the set in Barjatiya’s Karjat studio for the Salmaan Khan starrer.

3# Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace in Welcome Back

The set worth 3.5 crores was built by Sailesh Mahadik for the song Tuti bole wedding di in Aneez Bazmi’s Welcome Back. The set built in Mumbai’s Film City was built in 20 days and was a replica of Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace.

4# The city of Mahishmati in Baahubali

The entire city of Mahishmati was created in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad for the high budget Baahubali. The most expensive movie of 250 crores has flagged and moved Indian cinema to newer heights. And yes, everything was epic in this movie.

5# Bombay of 60s in Bombay Velvet

Yes, Anurag Kashyap took a span of 10 months to create the Bombay of 60s in an area of 10 acres in Sri Lanka for the Ranbeer Kapoor starrer Bombay Velvet. Although the movie couldn’t  create a buzz… the efforts were duly appreciated.

6# Kolkata of 1940s in Detective Byomkesh Bakshi

The BBD Bagh of Kolkata was transformed to give a look of pre independent Calcutta with trams and vintage cars in the background. Vandana Kataria set the right tone of 1940s to the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer which even though failed at the box office was appreciated for the sets.

7# The Imperial Sets of Jodha Akbar

Karjat’s ND studio was transformed to improvise life to the epic historical drama of Akbar and Jodha Bai. Ashutosh Gowarikar in fact built few cottages in the set to prevent Hrithik’s and Aishwarya’s commute every day. Nitin Desai truly did a remarkable job this time.

8# The lavish Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ramleela

So lavish & costly was the set of Ramleela that poor Deepika had to continue the shoot of Nagada Sang Dhol Baje in spite of being hurt. The super high sets included a gym for Ranveer Singh to help him workout regularly and thus avoid shooting delays.

9# Dalhousie of Lootera

Dalhousie was recreated to give a feel of 50s. The set costing 50 lakhs however was destroyed on account of bad weather and another was thus built under artificial snowy summer conditions.

10# Breathtaking sets of Devdas

SLB is famous for his movies with gigantic, expensive and fancy sets in his movies. 7 months for Paro’s glass house containing 12,20,00,008 pieces of stained glass and Chandramukhi’s kotha built inside Mumbai studio around a lake to give a feel of Varanasi ghats were extravagant piece of art.
