Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Logo

Sooraj Barjatya’s banner is known for delivering cinema meant for the family audience in an age where the celluloid is filled with unusual concepts. In the same league we have Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo.. Salmaan Khan shared the picture of PRDP’s logo on the micro-blogging site, with the caption “Logon this is the logo of PRDP, matlab Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Coming this Diwali”.

Salman and Sooraj Barjatya teamed up thrice before PRDP. Each of the previous three films turned out to be blockbusters- ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’, ‘Hum Apke Hain Koun!’, and ‘Hum Saath Sath Hain’.

Nawaz’s persona exudes the nuanced characterization with a charisma to resonate deep in your soul!

Manjhi-The-Mountain-Man-Movie-Poster

It starts with – ‘Bahut bada hai tu? Bahut akad hai tohra me? Dekh.. Dekh kaise ukhadte hain akad tohri‘ and you know it will be Nawazuddin Siddiqui over the top in next 120 mins.. You subtract him from the list and there’s nothing extraordinary to be praised..

STORY – 6/10
Dashrath Manjhi is a lower cast poor man and minor son of Bonded Labour whose mother make him run far away to save him from getting trapped in the situation, living in a remote village cut off from the world by a rocky mountain range in terms of basic necessities; beliefs; traditions and everything… They don’t even know that train journey costs you some money to shed. Marriages here are fixed in childhood and that’s how he has Phaguniya (Radhika Apte) in his life whom he elopes with due struggle though and with whom he falls in love while coming back from ‘sheher‘. Here’s where you feel it would be a charming love story.

But things change for him when once, while climbing the mountain to bring him food, his wife slips off the rocky terrain, falls, rushed to hospital for no use and dies but delivers the second baby. Overwhelmed by grief, Dashrath decides to carve out a path through the mountain, so that no one else would suffer his fate. Mighty challenges can’t blow him away and he doesn’t stop with the deadliest natural disasters; not even when there’s drought in the village and he’s the sole creature in Gehlaur village, near Gaya in Bihar; not even a long walk to Delhi all the way from Bihar to meet Indira Gandhi and not even all the curses and evils played by local politicians there.. For 22 years, all by himself, with just a hammer and a chisel, he hammers away at the rocks, till the path is carved out from the mountain to reach Wazirganj; now just a kilometer..

The film’s postscript states that 52 years after he started breaking the mountain, 30 years after he finished and 4 years after his death the government finally made a metalled road to Gehlaur in 2011.

Screenplay & Direction – 6/10
Ketan Mehta (The man of Rang Rarasiya fame and do believe me; he also directed Captain Vyom!) does his best to portray Dashrath Manjhi in Nawazuddin Siddiqui but needlessly builds sub plots which fall short to relate to the main narrative. Prashant Narayan‘s wife’s murder and his revenge as a Naxallite did not make much sense to me. While the second half drags, Nawaz’s Delhi visit finishes pretty abruptly. Pankaj Tripathi‘s involvement as the local landlord’s son isn’t much relevant to the main plot and if he is there.. Why not use his full potential? Why not use Prashant Narayan and Tigmanshu Dhulia when they aren’t a cameo over celluloid?

The screenplay however is over the top in some scenes where you find yourself midst struggle with Manjhi: The Mountain Man. Couple of pick ups I can’t stop myself mentioning:

  • Nawaz’s romance with Radhika Apte is mesmerizing and takes a heartbeat. You smile when they do.
  • Solo scenes where Nawaz struggles to bear the sun and searches for water are intense.

The dialogues by Mahendra Jhakar, Anjum Rajabali & Ketan Mehta are witty at some places and mark a strong impression at certain places. Few worth mentioning are:

  • Jab tak todenge nahi, tab tak chodenge nahi. Bahut he lamba dangal chalega re.. Teri m** k*.. Taiyaar hai? (Laughs) Haan.. Taiyaar hai!
  • Shandaar ZabarJAST Zindabaad‘ comes 5+ times in various emotions..
  • Nawaz to Reporter: Pahaad tode se bhi mushkil hai ka?
  • Bhagwaan ke bharose na baithiye.. Ka pata bhagwaan humre bharose baitha ho! – This dialogue particularly could have been better used if placed at the right point!

Cinematography – 6/10
Cinematography by Rajiv Jain makes its mark with staggering impression.. The village looks real village while the mountain is ferocious.

Make Up – 6.5/10
Wafisha Rahman and Mantu Shaw do a decent mash up but forget to cut down the glamour of Radhika Apte. In a village where there’s scarcity all around, Apte looks fresh and amazingly alluring and magnetic.

Music – 6/10
Sandesh Shandilya‘s music doesn’t break the monotony of the movie and suits well to the background! While Ketan Mehta & Deepak Ramola pen down some lyrics, Bhavin Sashtri & Pawani Pandey vocalize the words well.. I personally liked ‘Dum Kham‘ by Hitesh Sonik & Divya Kumar.

Acting – 8/10
Its Nawazudding Siddiqui and others.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a distinguished class and skillful in the capital play. He has nailed it with his extra ordinary attainment as a superlative actor. His persona exudes the nuanced characterization with a charisma to resonate deep in your soul. Nawazuddin scores much higher in this sparkling performance while depicting the exact psyche of a focused love with a challenged mindset. His eyes do the talking, his talking enacts the emotions and the emotions come out through his body language. Radhika Apte seems to be high on her career with Lai Bhaari, Badlapur, Hunterr & Ahalya. And now with Manjhi, she shall surely turn out be a famous choice to be dated with.
Tigmanshu Dhulia, Pankaj Tripathi, Prashant Narayan, Gaurav Dwivedi, Deepa Sahi & Jagat Rawat play their limited versions unartificially.

On whole, its Nawazuddin’s movie with a familiar screenplay. It isn’t the masala watch that you might be craving for, to rom com your weekend but yes, an untold story of a real hero is something you must give a watch.

Dashrath Manjhi ran away from home at a very young age, mainly working at Dhanbad‘s coal mines. Subsequently he returned to his village and carved a path 360-foot-long (110 m), 25-foot-deep (7.6 m) in places and 30-foot-wide (9.1 m) to form a road through the rocks in Gehlour hill. He quoted that, When I started hammering the hill, people called me a lunatic but that steeled my resolve.

He completed the work in 22 years (1960–1982). This road reduced the distance between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of the Gaya district from 80 km to 02 km. Though mocked for his efforts, he has made life easier for people of Gehlour village. Later, Manjhi said, Though most villagers taunted me at first, there were quite a few who lent me support later by giving me food and helping me buy my tools.
